You welcome to my life as a Landlord, where we untangle all things housing and educate the curious. If

you're looking for some entertainment with some honest, awkward conversations, you've come to the

right show. I'm your host, Dr. Jennifer Salisbury. This is my life as a landlord. Welcome to It Aloha, and

welcome to my life as a Landlord. This is what I'm calling it podcast Extra. Who is this lady? As I've

recorded ten episodes now, it occurs to me that I need to give you, my listeners, an idea of who I am.

Why on earth am I even doing these podcasts? And I wanted to give you some context of why I am

enjoying creating this content for you every day. So this is not an episode. It's not an official podcast

episode. It's what I call a podcast extra. So I'm releasing a new podcast every Saturday morning right

around 07:00, a.m. Pacific time. Come heller high water every Saturday. This is something that I've seen

on other Vloggers and other podcasters where they force themselves to create content. And I'm doing the

same thing. I'm actually really enjoying it that I am able to do this, but along the way, I knew I would

introduce myself. I know I'm going to be doing some interviews with some other people very soon, but I

wanted to introduce you to me and let you know who is this lady? Well, it's very simple. Let me give you

the rundown of my education because I love me some school. I'm a US Naval Academy grad. I was on

two ships, a cruiser in San Diego and a carrier in Norfolk, Virginia. Ran reactors in the US Nuclear Navy

as a propulsion engineer. And I learned about conventional engineering also on my cruiser. I really enjoy

engineering and climbing all over the engines. I have a master's degree in Engineering Management

from Old Dominion University. And that's in Virginia. I have a second master's degree in Business

Administration, studying Learning and Knowledge Management, which was on Walden University,

which was all online. And I have a doctorate in education in Higher education and adult learning, also

from Walden. Again, all online. And my thesis was about intergenerational communication, studying

retirees and their motivation to pass down knowledge outside of their family. And I actually put a copy of

my thesis on the website. So go to my life Asalandlord.com and you can see a copy of my thesis. I can

tell you if you're not used to research, it might overwhelm you, but just read the abstract, and then you

can get into some of the conclusion stuff in the back. So if you want to go in the middle of when I did the

focus groups and the interviews, it is quite interesting. There was a lot of dogs involved in my study.

That was not expected, which is kind of cool. But that's my education. That's a rundown of my resume. I

want to talk a little bit about my family. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in

Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have one younger sister who also graduated from the US. Naval Academy

and now lives in Dallas, Texas. I'm from? As I said, I'm from Albuquerque. I went to Annapolis,

Maryland, to the Naval Academy when I was 17 years old. I spent five years, one month and eight

days in the Navy. And I got out of the US. Navy in 2003 and I headed to Maui. My mom was a founding

programmer for the Observatories there in Kihei for the telescopes on Haleakala. And in 2004, I moved

myself and my grandmother to Maui. In 2006, I met a Canadian guy named Mike Salisbury. Visionary,

super, hard worker. And six months later, I married him. A month after that, we had an immigration

nightmare. And then the recession hit. That was fun. We ended up moving back to Canada, to British

Columbia, where his family was and still is. And I grew up as a landlord in British Columbia. I've done it

all evictions, warnings, leases. We've developed rentals, renovations, permits. Not permits after the fact.

Permits. 1s And in 2015, we returned to Maui to help Mike build out a project. 32 unit condos in South

Kihei called Paradise Ridge. He bought this property in 1995. And yes, if you're counting, we're 28 years

in and we are almost ready to turn those units at Paradise Ridge over to the owners, which is amazing. As

I record this, we are about two weeks away from our first certificates of occupancy. It's pretty amazing.

So I'm married to this wonderful man for 16 years and counting. I have a dog named Mac. Mac is a

golden retriever. German shepherd. And as I record, he is sitting right here next to me. He thinks I

control the rain and he gets mad at me when it's raining, which is really funny. He's twelve. And I

brought him from British Columbia to Maui. And yes, he just heard his name. Come here. He just heard

his name. So he's sitting right next to me, even closer now. Okay, so that's my education. That's my

family now. I remotely run 20 rental units in British Columbia. And during COVID I did not visit British

Columbia at all because we couldn't go across the border. Didn't visit there for three years. As I

mentioned, we're about ready to have occupancy and turnover to the owners association in Maui. I'm on

the board of directors of Maui United Way and Mike is a licensed general contractor in Hawaii and is a

Red Seal Journeyman carpenter in British Columbia. And he used to be a home protection builder.

They've changed the rules since we were in Maui, now with the HPO builder in BC, so we're looking to

build more units, 34 more units in BC. We're not sure if they're going to be apartments or condos yet. But

as real estate investors and developers, it's constantly about the numbers. 1s And I've learned this lesson

after being a landlord for all these years. The tenant is part of the asset. If you screen the tenant properly

and you take care of the tenant as the asset appreciates, the tenant will grow with you. And we thank

them all the time for allowing us to support them along their journey. Most tenants leave us because they

buy a house, and that's perfectly fine with me. But along the way, I know that I have set them up for

success as much as possible, which is really kind of cool. 1s We're mentors to many folks who want to

help learn about real estate development, real estate investment. Maybe they don't have good credit. We

mentor a bunch of people. But we are also mentees, including several education programs. We've done

Tony Robbins. We're in several programs about housing. And most recently, we joined how to Learn

sorry how to Buy and Improve 20 plus unit multifamily Complexes. It's a program called Multifamily

Mindset. Ironically, the owner of Multifamily Mindset lives about two blocks away from Paradise Ridge,

right here on Maui, which is pretty amazing. So what we love doing is we love to improve communities.

And while we have done several smaller builds. 1s We really would like to do some bigger communities,

bigger apartment builds, bigger multifamily builds. That's really our call. Our ministry is creating

housing, and 2s I enjoy teaching you every single day. I've got to teach something to somebody, and

whether I'm on Facebook helping them with a pickle that they're in, or it's something that one of the

mentees is calling and we're talking, I've got to do that. It's something that I have to do every single day

is teach. And I think that's why my doctorate is in education is most doctorates in education are

superintendents of school districts or nurses or librarians. Well, I'm an entrepreneur. I don't fit any of

those molds. And I'm super happy that I'm able to help create community and help teach some of my

knowledge and my lesson learn to all of you. Now, there's a lot more to me than this little podcast extra,

but I'm hoping that this gives you an insight of who I am, a little bit of our history, that I'm a great big

nerd and I love school. I would go to school every day if I could, but ultimately, I like building

communities, and my husband and I enjoy providing housing. So there you go. Who is this lady? There

you go in a nutshell. Thanks. Please subscribe to the podcast if you haven't already. You can subscribe
